Road pavement transfers the wheel load above it to the subgrade by spreading it gradually. Each layer distributes the stress coming from the layer above over a wider area. When one of those layers is laid thinner than designed, the layers beneath are exposed to higher stress than intended.
The result is invisible in the first year. It usually appears in the third to fifth year as rutting in the wheel path, then as crocodile cracking and finally as failure. At that point patching is no longer a solution, because the problem is not on the surface but beneath it.
For that reason thickness and compaction are checked and recorded on every layer at ACARTEK. Those records are a guarantee for the client authority and for us alike.
